We have been BUSY, BUSY, BUSY making SOAP!!

We at 5th Avenue Bath Co. have been super busy making new soaps. We have lots curing which will be ready in about another 3 weeks (beginning of February 2008). We took some photos of the process for you to enjoy!

In about 3-4 weeks (first week March 08),
we will have the following soaps posted in our web store:

In about 5-6 weeks (mid March 08), we will have the following soaps ready:

We will also be 'unleashing' our spa mineral soap bar in Mid March. Our Spa Mineral Soap Bar is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! We love this soap because it softens our skin, is cleansing, and best of all: salt is a great natural deodorizer. Our first Spa Mineral Bar is going to be available soon and it is a limited edition scent (SAKE); we guarantee this soap will fly off our shelves.
COLORANTS IN OUR SOAP:
We have been asked many times what we use to add color to some of our soaps. We use oxides, ultramarine pigments and clays for some of our soaps while others are 'naked' which means they stay the color of the butters/oils used.

Here is some info on the oxides, ultramarines and clays we use in many of our products:

Oxides & ultramarine pigments are stable mineral colors; they are non-toxic and non-bleeding.

Clays have been used for centuries for cosmetic use, and are present in almost all traditional beauty regimens. They exfoliate, clean and invigorate the skin while improving blood circulation. Clay has the ability to absorb excess oils, dirt and harmful toxins from the skin. Cosmetic clays are made up of different mineral contents and each clay type has a different effect on the skin. The high mineral content of clay rejuvenates the skin while the clay exfoliates and stimulates blood circulation to the skin. Regular use of clay facials will remove dead skin cells, improve circulation to the skin, remove debris from the pores and bring about a smooth healthy glow. Each clay has the ability to absorb toxins from the skin but they differ in their level of absorption. Clays can be used in facials, body powders, soaps, and as a natural colorant for soap, lotions, creams, bath salts and more.

We generally use three types of clays in our products:

Bentonite Clay usually forms from weathering of volcanic ash, most often in the presence of water. It is a highly absorbent clay that pulls oils and toxins from the skin and is one of the best clays for making clay poultices. It is best suited for oily skin.
Pink kaolin is a gentle clay, making it suitable for sensitive skin. It helps stimulate circulation to the skin while gently exfoliating and cleansing it. Pink kaolin clay does not draw oils from the skin and can therefore be used on dry skin types.
White kaolin clay is the mildest of all clays. It is suitable for sensitive skin. It helps stimulate circulation to the skin while gently exfoliating and cleansing it.

Exfoliating Body Polish with Shea Butter

We are making our Exfoliating Body Polish with Shea Butter, and it is as scrumptious as it looks! As we have said on our web store, we combined the moisturizing, re-hydrating and calming benefits of Shea Butter with the skin rejuvenating traits of Jojoba Oil and Fractionated Coconut Oil. This has been blended with pure turbinado sugar to create this unique and delightful body scrub. We also use kaolin clay (white) to help detoxify the skin. The result is a scrub that is unsurpassed in its ability to exfoliate, moisturize and rejuvenate your skin like no other scrub you have tried.

First, we mix the butters and oils and melt them on the stove.
Then, we put the melted butters and oils on top of
cold, ice water, and we mix it until it begins to solidify.

After mixing for about 15-20 minutes, we are ready to add the exfoliants to the mix.

Finally, it is ready to be bottled and labeled.

Treat your body to our Exfoliating Body Polish with Shea Butter; your skin will thank you.

Even if you don't use 5th Avenue Bath Co's scrubs, here are some scrub hints to remember--

SCRUB TIPS:

Your entire body should be "scrubbed" at least one time per week, but you can exfoliate your skin mulitple times each week. Using scrubs serves as a stimulating massage and improves blood circulation. You should scrub in a circular motion, starting with the feet, ankles, and legs, then working on to the hands, arms, and shoulders, gradually working your way down to the back, then up through the torso towards the heart. You do not need to scrub "hard" to exfoliate your skin. A cool-water rinse after a body scrub will further activate blood circulation throughout the body. Pat dry and moisturize. As this treatment is revitalizing and energizing, it is best practiced in the morning, but you can do it anytime.

Shea Butter Facts

Shea Butter is a good emollient for moisturizers and helps to penetrate the skin. Shea Butter has a high amount of Vitamin A and Vitamin E, as well as phytosterols, triterpenes, fatty esters and phenolic acids. Vitamins A and E are important in helping to repair skin damage; phytosterols, and triterpenes aid in skin allergies; phenolic acids are good for cellular protection. Shea Butter is widely used to protect skin from the sun’s UV rays, as well as soften and heal cracked and aged skin.
Benefits of Shea Butter (just to name a few):
* Moisturizes and softens skin
* Relieves itching
* Aids with symptoms of dermatitis and eczema

The unique shea tree is native to African and can now be found in 19 regions from Senegal to Ethiopia. Each summer, the tree bears a fruit the size of a plum, which contains a nut. Shea butter is the fat extracted from the seed that is removed from the shea nut. The nuts are mixed with water and boiled until the butter rises to the surface. We actually buy ours from the Burkina Faso region of Africa.
